Clarion Goes Back to Press for Newbery and Caldecott Winners

According to Clarion spokesperson Deb Shapiro, the publisher has ordered thousands more copies of both The Three Pigs by David Wiesner and A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park since Tuesday, when the two books won the 2002 Caldecott Medal and Newbery Medal respectively. Approximately 75,000 copies of The Three Pigs bearing a sticker of the Caldecott Medal will be added to the initial press run of 65,000 (as of December 31, 2001) and 59,000 copies of A Single Shard bearing a Newbery Medal sticker will be added to its initial run of 10,000 (also as of December 31, 2001).

Shapiro anticipates that The Three Pigs will ship by March 1 and A Single Shard by mid-February. Booksellers who want stickers for their existing stock can request them from the American Library Association (www.ala.org [2]).

According to Shapiro, a single house has published both the Caldecott and Newbery medals a handful of times, including 1994, when Houghton Mifflin published both the Caldecott winner, Grandfather's Journey by Allen Say, and the Newbery winner, The Giver by Lois Lowry. In 1997, Dial also published both medallists, as did Atheneum in 1965. Weisner, who wrote and illustrated The Three Pigs, is one of only seven other illustrators who have won the Caldecott medal two or more times. Linda Sue Park is the first Asian-American to win the 80-year-old award.
