43* ABA Member Stores Open in 2012

*Updated: Wednesday, January 23, 2013

The American Booksellers Association welcomed 43 indie bookstores that opened in 2012 in 25 states. Among them were six branches of existing businesses and seven selling primarily used books. California is home to seven new stores; New York, five; Florida and Texas, three; and Kansas, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina, two.

One of the South Carolina stores was opened by retired lawyer and University of South Carolina Adjunct Professor of English Bill Funderburk with his wife, state Rep. Laurie Slade Funderburk. On June 12, the Funderburks opened Books on Broad in downtown Camden, South Carolina. Camden is seeing a surge in local shopping, and Funderburk is happy to be a part of  it.

“We’re here to support our community, support people who like to read, and be a part of the revitalization of our area,” Funderburk said. “We’re following a passion, and we’re trying to foster that in the community.”

In Riverside, California, Linda Nurick opened Cellar Door Books, a 1,745-square-foot general bookstore with a hand-selected inventory and big plans to engage the area’s entire community of readers.

“I knew my city needed an independent bookstore, and I saw that this was happening nationwide,” she said. “People were starting to regret, perhaps, the demise of the indie bookstore.”

To ensure that Cellar Door succeeds in meeting the needs of community members, Nurick has been asking customers about the books they want to read, books they have read and liked, or simply what they want to see in the store. Instead of placing a large order with a distributor, Nurick hand-picked each title that her store carries.

“I’m listening to the customers that are walking in the door,” she said. “I think that our customer base is thoughtful, intelligent, and wants to be challenged. And of course, there are some people that want to read something fun and light. I’m playing it as I go, and it seems to be working. People are coming in liking what they see.”

With more than $10,000 raised via the crowd-funding platform Indiegogo, Chris and Gina Jones opened Monte Cristo Bookshop in New London, Connecticut, just in time for the holiday season.

“Sales were triple our expectations, considering we have only marketed ourselves through social networking,” said Chris Jones. The holiday season proved to Jones that the New London needed a bookstore. “We were welcomed with open arms,” he said, adding that one customer entered the store clapping his hands.
