The 2013 Pultizer Prize for Fiction was awarded on Monday to The Orphan Master’s Son by Adam Johnson (Random House). Johnson is an avid supporter of independent bookstores, and is part of the Why Indies Matter video campaign.

Today, the American Booksellers Association announces the winners of the 2013 Indies Choice Book Awards and the E.B. White Read-Aloud Awards, as voted by independent booksellers nationwide.

The number one choice of booksellers for this spring’s Kids’ Indie Next List is Stephan Pastis’ Timmy Failure, a chronicle of one the world’s most unfortunate — and funniest — kid detectives. Here, Pastis talks about what it’s like to write humor and prose for kids as well as how he crafts his comedic commentary.

One of the two #1 picks for the April 2013 Indie Next List is Jill McCorkle’s Life After Life, which introduces readers to the world of Pine Haven Estates, a retirement community in Fulton, North Carolina. McCorkle recently spoke to Bookselling This Week about the genesis of the novel, the process of bringing her characters to life, and the reasons behind many authorial decisions.

The Ninth Annual PEN World Voices Festival of International Literature will take place April 29 – May 5, in New York City. Through a partnership with the ABA, PEN is providing a promo code that will allow ABA bookstore members to offer their customers tickets at 20 percent off the regular price.

The owners and staff at all ABA member bookstores can now cast their ballots for the 2013 Indies Choice Book Awards and the E.B. White Read-Aloud Awards. Voting is open until April 15 via an electronic ballot on BookWeb.org.
