DIESEL Reopens in Malibu
On Sunday, October 23, DIESEL, A Bookstore, opened its new location in the Malibu Country Mart in Malibu, California. The store, owned by Alison Reid and John Evans, offered opening-day discounts, free pie, and T-shirt giveaways, as reported by Malibu Patch.
In February, when Reid and Evans closed the former DIESEL store in Malibu due to high rent and ongoing area construction, they announced their intention to find a new location. DIESEL also has stores in Oakland and Brentwood.
Brookline Booksmith Turns 50
During the first week of November, Brookline Booksmith, in Brookline, Massachusetts, will be celebrating 50 years of business. As a way to thank their customers, the store will offer a Day-by-Day 20 percent off sale for five days, featuring a different category each day: Hardcovers, used books and remainders, children’s books, gifts and learning products, and paperbacks.
The store opened as Paperback Booksmith in 1961 and was one of only three “paperbacks-only” bookstores in the country, heralding in “The Paperback Revolution.” Over the years, the bookstore added hardcovers, remainders, and used books, as well as learning products and gifts. It is also known for its Author Event Series.
Marshall Smith is the founder of Brookline Booksmtih; Dana Brigham, the manager; and Evelyn Vigo, the treasurer. The three, who collectively have more than “100 years of residence, community involvement, activism, and devotion to the Town of Brookline,” said in a release that they were “deeply proud to have fostered not just a bookstore but a cultural center that so clearly reflects the essence of Brookline and surrounding areas: Their thirst for knowledge and education; their sense of humor and fun; and their commitment to the importance of community for all residents.”
