Finalists Announced for the Seventh Annual Audie Awards

On March 6, the Audio Publishers Association (APA) released the names of the 69 finalists for the Seventh Annual Audie Awards. This year, the Audie Awards, which honor excellence in audio publishing, will be presented in 23 categories.

The finalists were selected by a panel of over 100 judges who were responsible for reviewing 522 audiobooks, which were released between November 1, 2000, and October 31, 2001.

In the Abridged Fiction category, the finalists are:

  • The Bonesetter's Daughter, by Amy Tan, read by Amy Tan and Joan Chen (New Millenium Audio)
  • The Corrections, by Jonathan Franzen, read by Dylan Baker (Simon & Schuster Audio)
  • We Were the Mulvaneys, by Joyce Carol Oates, read by J. Todd Adams (HighBridge Audio)

In the Unabridged Fiction category, the finalists are:

  • Bel Canto, by Ann Patchett, read by Anna Fields (Blackstone Audiobooks)
  • The Priestess of Avalon, by Marion Zimmer Bradley, read by Bernadette Dunne (Books on Tape, Inc.)
  • The Talisman, by Stephen King and Peter Straub, read by Frank Muller (Simon & Schuster Audio)

In the Unabridged Classic Fiction category, the finalists are:

  • The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, read by Richard Dreyfus and Stacy Keach (L.A. Theatre Works)
  • Gone with the Wind, by Margaret Mitchell, read by Linda Stephens (Recorded Books, LLC)
  • A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, by Betty Smith, read by Kate Burton (HarperCollins Publishers)

In the Abridged Nonfiction category, the finalists are:

  • Ghost Soldiers, by Hampton Sides, read by James Naughton (Random House Audio)
  • Jazz, by Geoffrey C. Ward and Ken Burns, read by LeVar Burton (Random House Audio)
  • John Adams, by David McCullough, read by Edward Herrmann (Simon & Schuster Audio)

In the Unabridged Nonfiction category, the finalists are:

  • Album of Memories, by Tom Brokaw, read by the author and a cast (Random House Audio)
  • John Adams, by David McCullough, read by Nelson Runger (Recorded Books, LLC)
  • The Life and Works of Chopin, by Jeremy Siepmann, read by Jeremy Siepmann with Anton Lesser, Neville Jason, Elaine Claxton, and Karen Archer (Naxos Audiobooks Ltd.).

In the Children's Titles for Ages Seven and Under category, the finalists are:

  • Ballet Stories: Coppelia, Giselle, Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Swann Lake, retold by David Angus, read by Jenny Agutter (Naxos AudioBooks Ltd.)
  • The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses, by Paul Goble, read by Lance White Magpie; authentic Native American music and vocal accompaniments by Robert Tree Cody and Curtis Zunigha (Live Oak Media)
  • Joseph Had a Little Overcoat, by Simms Taback, read by Simms Taback along with members of The Klezmatics (Live Oak Media).

The Humor category finalists are:

  • Blandings Castle, by P.G. Wodehouse, read by Jonathan Cecil (Chivers North America)
  • Napalm and Silly Putty, by George Carlin, read by George Carlin (HighBridge Audio)
  • The New Joys of Yiddish, by Leo Rosten, revised by Lawrence Bush, read by Ron Rifkin, Peter Riegert, Harry Goz, Michael Goz, Larry Keith, and Carole Shelley (Random House Audio).

The black tie awards ceremony will take place on Friday evening, May 3, 2002, at the United Nations Building in New York City at the end of the first day of BookExpo America (BEA).
