Mysterious Galaxy to Open Second Location

This week, San Diego’s Mysterious Galaxy announced plans to open a second Southern California location this summer. The new store will be in Redondo Beach.

Mysterious Galaxy, which specializes in the mystery, science fiction, fantasy, urban fantasy, and horror genres, opened in San Diego in 1993. For 18 years, the store has prided itself on its calendar of events, knowledgeable staff, and quality of inventory.

The Redondo Beach location will carry much of the same type of inventory, along with more literary fiction, and some handpicked titles chosen by co-owner Terry Gilman.

“It will have everything that we continue to be passionate about,” said co-owner Maryelizabeth Hart, the store’s publicity manager.

Gilman lives in the Redondo Beach area, where she launched an extremely successful book-and-author series called “Ladies, Lunch, and Literacy” in 2008.

“Terry has built a community in the area, and we really want to provide opportunities for those readers,” said Hart.

The new store will be about twice the square footage of the original location, occupying 4,000 square feet of a 6,000-square foot building, with the remaining footage occupied by a café. Mysterious Galaxy’s owners – Gilman, Hart, and author Jeff Mariotte – are planning to have a soft opening in the summer, with grand opening events in October.

Prior to announcing these plans, Gilman had been living in the Redondo Beach area, where she was extremely successful with a book-and-author series called “Ladies, Lunch, and Literacy,” which she launched in 2008.
