Obituary: Maxwell J. Lillienstein, Former ABA General Counsel
Maxwell J. Lillienstein, a prominent constitutional law attorney, partner in a New York City law firm, and former general counsel to the American Booksellers Association, died on May 13 at his home, in Boynton Beach, Florida. He was a graduate of City College (CCNY) and Columbia Law School.
Lillienstein submitted briefs as amicus curiae in several important First Amendment cases decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. He was an active member of the Freedom to Read Committee and the author of many articles on the First Amendment and antitrust issues affecting the bookselling industry.
He also served as a village trustee and village attorney for the Village of Ardsley, New York, and served on the Board of Directors of Indian Spring Country Club, Inc. in Boynton Beach, Florida.
He is survived by his sister Bernice Hogan, his sons Steven and Robert, his daughter Carol Kizer, and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Janet.
