Obituary: Richard Daley of Pass Christian Books
Richard Daley, co-owner and manager of Pass Christian Books in Pass Christian, Mississippi, died of heart complications on February 3, 2011.
“His zeal for promoting and discussing favorite authors will be fondly remembered by both customers of the store and friends,” said Pass Christian co-owner Scott Naugle, who noted that Daley had a particular interest in Native American history.
After Hurricane Katrina wiped out the store, Daley and Naugle decided to start over. Daley sold books out of his living room, out of his trunk, and at street fairs until they found a storefront. He would often deliver books personally and stay to socialize. Daley hosted many authors who came to the store for book signings.
He was a member of ABA, the Southern Independent Booksellers Association, and Pass Christian Chamber of Commerce. He was also an enthusiastic participant in several Mardi Gras krewes in New Orleans and Pass Christian. A passionate advocate for the care of animals, Daley worked with the local humane society. A memorial fund has been established in his name at the South Mississippi Humane Society.
