Tattered Cover Airport Deal Moves Forward

Denver’s Tattered Cover Book Store, which currently has three locations in the city, expects to get final approval in June to open four stores at Denver International Airport (DIA).

Under an exclusive license agreement with airport bookseller Hudson News, four new Tattered Cover stores will be introduced, as well as four Hudson Newsstands, and one combination Tattered Cover/Hudson Newsstand in DIA’s main terminal and three concourses.

The projected date of completion for all four Tattered Cover stores is February 2014, but some of the stores are expected to open sooner, said General Manager Matt Miller.

“We are very excited to enter into this relationship,” said Miller. “We think it will be a good introduction for travelers to get a sense of what’s in Denver, and it will provide good marketing opportunities for us, and all of our stores overall. We’re looking forward to getting started.”

This week, a Denver City Council committee unanimously voted in favor of bringing the contract up for approval by the full committee and the mayor. That is likely to happen in June, said Miller.

Projected sales for the first year for the entire project, encompassing both the Hudson News and Tattered Cover stores, are $17.9 million, and it’s estimated the stores will employ 78 people overall. Tattered Cover will yield a percentage of those sales, and of the 78 new employees, 10 are expected to be Tattered Cover booksellers.
