The Women's National Book Association (WNBA) has announced the winners of the 2004 Lucile Micheels Pannell Awards.

National Children's Book Week, which will be held from November 17 - 23, turns a venerable 84-years-old this year. Since 1919, booksellers, educators, librarians, and families have celebrated National Children's Book Week during the week before Thanksgiving to help bring more children in contact with quality children's literature.

The full Winter 2003/2004 Children's Book Sense 76, with bookseller quotes, is now online at http://news.bookweb.org/read/1983. Stores should begin receiving copies of the list during the last week of November.

This week, we are announcing the top ten picks for the Winter 2003/2004 Children's Book Sense 76, based on the nominations of independent booksellers nationwide. Book Sense 76 Editor-in-Chief Dan Cullen sends many, many thanks to all the booksellers who nominated titles. He notes, too, that all nominations are crucial. Many factors come into play in selecting the quote that is printed in the full 76, but those that are not published play a very important role in composing the entire list.

The October 6 issue of The New Yorker -- on sale now -- features the latest Book Sense insert, "Just Kidding -- Great Books for Children and Young Adults." The five-page special feature presents the handselling favorites of 12 independent booksellers -- all titles drawn from the fall 2003 Children's Book Sense 76. (To view the full 76, click here.)

The Children's Booksellers and Publishers Committee met on Monday, September 15, in New York City, to develop events for BookExpo America 2004, to be held from June 2 - 6 in Chicago. At the meeting, the group, a joint committee of ABA, the Association of Booksellers for Children, and the Children's Book Council, considered speakers for the show's Friday morning Children's Book and Author Breakfast and also planned the Thursday afternoon children's booksellers' educational sessions.
