Booklovers’ Gourmet Thrives

Earlier this month, Booklovers’ Gourmet, in Webster, Massachusetts, was featured in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, which commended owner Debra Horan for running a successful independent bookstore for 17 years.

“I’ve been able to compete because the store has a different feel to it,” Horan said. “It’s more intimate. Everyone says, ‘It’s so cozy in here.’”

Another factor that has contributed to her success, she said, is a well-rounded inventory, including locally made products.

“There is much more awareness of how people spend their money and the influence they have on benefiting their own community,” said Horan. “The community doesn’t benefit when you buy on Amazon. It’s the people who live and work here who make up a community. If you want to see that continue, you have to actively support it.”

Mystery Lovers Bookshop for Sale

On Monday, Mary Alice Gorman and Richard Goldman announced that they are seeking a buyer for Mystery Lovers Bookshop in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, as reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. The 21-year-old bookstore, which was honored with the 2010 Raven Award from the Mystery Writers of America, has established a national reputation for its extensive inventory specializing in the mystery genre and its annual Festival of Mystery.

“It seems like the right time,” said Gorman. “We had a hugely successful holiday season, we’ve made a great start with e-book sales, and there are so many opportunities to be pursued that will require new vision, new hands and new backs to exploit. Besides, we have all those grandchildren to go visit.”
