Booksellers Share Their Picks on NPR

Three independent booksellers recently shared their summer reading recommendations with National Pubic Radio's Susan Stamberg.

Among the books recommended Lucia Silva of Portrait of a Bookstore, Daniel Goldin of Boswell Book Company, and Rona Brinlee of The BookMark on the May 31 Morning Edition are Anthropology of an American Girl by Hilary Thayer Harmann (Spiegel & Grau), The Kingdom of Ohio by Matthew Fleming (Amy Einhorn Books/Putnam), The Prince of the Mist by Carlos Ruiz Zafon (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers), and Yarn: Remembering the Way Home by Kyoko Mori (GemmaMedia).

Anderson's Bookshops Win Local Honors

Anderson's Bookshops were recognized at the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce Small Business Awards last week.

The bookstore was awarded first place in the Outstanding Retail category, and was also named Small Business of the Year. Store co-owner Becky Anderson, a member of the ABA Board of Directors, accepted the awards. “We're being recognized tonight because we build these bridges and relationships,” with residents, other businesses, and the surrounding community, she said.

Lift Bridge Brightens Downtown

Volunteers plant flowers in Brockport, New York.

Pat Kutz took a break from selling books at Lift Bridge Book Shop in Brockport, New York, to plant flowers for a day.

Kutz and Jo Matela organized Downtown Flower Planting 2010, with help from the Chamber of Commerce and other local businesses. More than three dozen volunteers showed up to plant the hostas, impatiens, and geraniums.

“It was well worth it,” said Kutz.
