Community Grieves Loss of David Thompson

David Thompson, a lover of crime fiction, a publisher, and a longtime staff member of Murder by the Book in Houston, Texas, died unexpectedly on Monday, September, 13.

Since the tragic news broke on Tuesday morning, there has been an outpouring of sorrow expressed by mystery readers, writers, and friends. The tributes that have been published as well as posted on the bookstore's Facebook and Twitter pages reflect Thompson’s stature as a fixture of the mystery and literary communities.

Thompson began stocking shelves for Murder by the Book in 1989 and worked his way up to publicity manager, a position he held for years.  It was there he met his wife, McKenna Jordan, who now owns the store. In 2005, Thompson started Busted Flush Press, which he recently sold to Tyrus Books.

Valerie Koehler, owner of Blue Willow Bookshop, told the Houston Chronicle: "David brought so much energy to the local book scene for many years. His enthusiasm for the authors visiting Houston was contagious. He was always supportive of Blue Willow's ventures – telling us about new authors, new ideas, and working on joint projects. Our hearts are heavy today."

On Sunday, September 26, there will be a celebration of David Thompson’s life at The Briar Club, a local restaurant. More information on the celebration, as well as on a fund set up for those who wish to make a donation in David's name, is available at Murder By the Book's website.
