Hawley-Cooke Consolidates: Three Stores Become Two

On January 7, Hawley-Cooke announced that it was closing its Glenview Pointe store in Louisville, Kentucky. A statement signed by the store's four owners, Graham and Martha Neal Cooke, Audrey Schuetze, and William Schuetze, read in part, "It is with great sadness, but with a voice of confidence in the future of Hawley-Cooke Booksellers … [that we make this announcement]. We are proud of the Glenview Pointe store and the wonderful staff who made it a remarkable experience for all of us for over five years…. We are confident that this is the right move for the future of Hawley-Cooke Booksellers."

Melissa Bernstrom, Hawley-Cooke's public relations manager, told BTW, "This is a difficult but smart decision for Hawley-Cooke and we are moving forward. All Glenview Pointe staff will be reassigned to the other two stores."

Hawley-Cooke has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. The store has consistently been named Louisville's best bookstore by local publications and has been named "Best Bookstore in Kentucky" for the past two years by Kentucky Monthly magazine.

The Gardiner Lane and Shelbyville Road Plaza stores will remain open now and "for years to come, " according to the four owners. Sunday, January 6, was the Glenview Pointe store's last day of regular business. From Thursday, January 10, through Sunday, January 13, the store will hold a special consolidation sale. "Nothing is permanent but change," concluded Bernstrom.
