Obituaries: James Farley and Necia Salan

The independent bookselling community recently lost two of its own: James (Jim) Hull Farley, the founder and owner of Farley’s Bookshop, and  Necia (Nicky) Salan, the founder of Cover to Cover Booksellers in San Francisco.

James (Jim) Hull Farley, the founder and owner of Farley’s Bookshop in New Hope, Pennsylvania, for the past 44 years, died on September 30. He was 75.

Farley was also a Presbyterian minister, college professor, and entrepreneur. He held a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Ohio State University, a master’s degree in divinity from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, and a diplôme de docteur es sciences religieuses from the Académie de Strasbourg in France.

Farley is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughters, Jennifer and Rebekah; sister, Carolyn Young; and other extended family members.

A memorial service is planned for 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 14, at Solebury Friends Meeting House in New Hope. The service will be followed by a reception at Farley’s Bookshop. The family welcomes contributions in Farley’s memory to the Jonathan D. Krist Foundation, which honors Jonathan Krist, a talented musician, student activist, and past Farley’s staff member, who died in a car accident in 2006 at the age of 19.


Necia (Nicky) Salan, the founder of Cover to Cover Booksellers in San Francisco and a nationally recognized expert on literature for children and youth, died on October 10. She was 77.

Salan was a graduate of Barnard College and a native of Maryland. She moved to California in 1958, where she worked as a social worker before founding the bookstore. When Salan retired from bookselling in 1999, Cover to Cover passed into employee hands. The store closed in March of this year.

Salan is survived by her daughter, Debra, and son, Fred, and their families. Funeral services were held on October 12.
