San Francisco Chronicle to Feature Indie Bestsellers

Beginning this Sunday, the San Francisco Chronicle's Books section will feature the Northern California Independent Booksellers Association/IndieBound Bestsellers List. The indie list replaces a bestseller list that was compiled by the newspaper itself.

Trade Show Season StartsThe fall trade show season kicked off last weekend in Portland, Oregon, where members of the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association gathered for three days featuring educational programming, special author events, and exhibits.

The American Booksellers Association is looking forward to seeing booksellers at next week's trade shows hosted by the Midwest, Mountains & Plains, and Southern booksellers associations. ABA staff will be at each to celebrate independent bookselling, visit with booksellers, and share some updated and innovative education sessions. Booksellers are also invited to stop by ABA's tables at the shows to learn how the association's programs and services can help their businesses.

ABA Hopes to See You at PNBA

The Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Trade Show will be held from Thursday, September 10, through Saturday, September 12, at the Airport Holiday Inn in Portland, Oregon. And ABA CEO Oren Teicher and COO Len Vlahos will be there to present three educational offerings and to meet with booksellers on the trade show floor.

No E-Fairness in California Budget

Earlier this week, the e-fairness provision was left on the cutting room floor as California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger agreed with state legislators on a final budget plan, which did not include a provision for sales tax equity.

Regional Associations Offer "Eat. Sleep. Read." Calendar

Nine regional booksellers associations have joined to create a page-a-day calendar that promotes the IndieBound movement, launched by the American Booksellers Association at BookExpo America 2008. The regional associations plan to use profits from sales of the calendar, which is available exclusively to independent bookstores, to support member programming.

ABFFE Welcomes New Board MembersThe two newest members of the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression Board of Directors are Becky Anderson and Dan Cullen. Anderson was elected to a one-year term as ABFFE vice president. She is part of the fifth generation of Andersons at the helm of Anderson's Bookshops in Naperville, Aurora, and Downers Grove, Illinois. Anderson is also the vice president of the American Booksellers Association.
