Lonely Planet Embarks on Independent Bookstore Road Trip

Lonely Planet, the independent travel publisher, will begin a whirlwind, grand scale tour of independent bookstores on Saturday, May 8. A Lonely Planet RV, decked out with large side panels advertising the "Lonely Planet 2004 Independent Bookstore Road Trip," will tote Lonely Planet staff and, intermittently, trade press reporters, to visit over 100 independent bookstores throughout the eastern half of the U.S.

New York International Gift Fair Offers Endless Sidelines

The New York International Gift Fair, for which approximately 45,000 visitors came to the Jacob Javits Convention Center between January 31 and February 5, is the place to find out what's hot and what's not. Any retailer who carries stationery, greeting cards, watches, pens, and all manner of personal accessories would have found almost 3,000 exhibitors happy to demonstrate what will unquestionably sell out in the coming seasons.

Deadline for Free Listings in Booksellers' Resource Directory Extended

The deadline for vendors to submit information for inclusion in the new Booksellers' Resource Directory has been extended to Monday, February 23. Vendors of nonbook products and services that would be of interest to independent booksellers may submit data through an online form at www.bookweb.org/docs/brd/. More than 70 categories of products and services are included. It is expected that the Booksellers' Resource Directory will be online at BookWeb.org this spring.

Ingram Product Allows Booksellers to Order Direct From Publishers

On January 29, Ingram Book Group unveiled "pubsource," a new enhancement to its "ipage" Web site that provides booksellers with the ability to check availability and purchase book products directly from three participating publishers: Random House, Holtzbrinck Publishers Group, and HarperCollins.

On Wednesday, February 4, an e-mail was sent out to nonbook vendors who previously had a listing in the Booksellers Resource Directory (formerly the Source Guide). Please note that the deadline for submitting a listing to the directory has been extended to February 13.
